What is a brand story?
Many successful brands communicate with consumers through brand stories. The brand story plays an important part in helping consumers make sense of the brand. Your brand story is essentially the story of your business as perceived by your customers and potential customers. A HubSpot blog explains that a brand story recounts the series of events that sparked your company’s inception and expresses how that narrative still drives your mission today. Just like your favourite books and movie characters, if you can craft a compelling brand story, your audience will remember who you are, develop empathy for you, and, ultimately, care about you (your brand). Three critical elements of brand stories – plot, character and purpose play an important role in effective brand storytelling. Discover more about these three elements in a fascinating 2021 article by Adam J. Mills and Joby John published in the Journal of Strategic Marketing. Dive into the article here!: Go to the Journal Article.
“The consensus is that brand stories must contain elements of plot and character, plus some authorial intent – a purpose, moral, message or lesson anchored in a resonant context (Mills & John, 2021, p.6).”
Why developing an authentic brand story is important?
So, up to this point, we clarified that Brand Story is a way to present your brand in a storytelling format. We begin this to answer this question by going further into telling you that there are two things that businesses, entrepreneurs and marketing people need to pay attention to. Brand Story and brand narrative. A UK based marketing agency has this brilliant explanation to help us better understand the difference between the two. While a brand story is a business-centric model, a brand narrative is business, customer and product-centric all in one. So, where a brand story ends, a brand narrative continues to develop. For a brand narrative to be strong, it must be believable.
Here is what I consider the most important part of creating brand story. It must be authentic, believable and simple enough so all your consumers and your target audience can understand and trust the story they read or hear about your brand. In another Insights and Reflections blog post, I explored Benchmarking in Higher Education. It’s evident that aligning the creation of a brand story with benchmarking practices aimed at communicating quality and brand promises can significantly impact the perceived brand image, as well as consumers’ levels of loyalty and trust in the brand.
A 2010 research conducted in Taiwan explored the relationship between brand story and perceived brand image. The findings of the study revealed evidence suggesting that “a brand story with high authenticity, clear plot, and told by the first-person narrator tends to be perceived with more positive brand image than one with lower authenticity, an unclear plot and told by a non-first-person narrator.”
The findings of another recent research study published in the Tourism Management Journal support what the literature, marketing experts, and industry practitioners suggest regarding the importance of an authentic brand story in improving the perceived brand image of luxury hotels. The findings revealed that ‘a well-structured brand story has the potential to enhance brand image, mediated by narrative transportation’ (Ryu et al. 2019, p. 384). The research supports the notion that storytelling is indeed a vehicle for brand differentiation.
The last empirical study that I would like to provide as a strong reference to better understand the importance of an authentic brand story is from a 2012 study published in the Journal of Retailing. This study explored ways in which we can align our brand story with our products. The findings suggest that “authenticity, conciseness, reversal, and humour are generally useful in engaging readers, although brand story elements influence customer attitudes differently for search versus experience products” (Chiu et al., 2012, p. 262). One important conclusion drawn from the findings of this study is that authenticity holds greater significance for experience products than for search products.
When does a brand story work best?
Crafting a brand story, narrative, and storytelling isn’t straightforward. It’s a complex field grounded in extensive scientific research and experimental studies of consumer behavior, emotions, attitudes, and decision-making processes.
Christopher Newman, Associate Professor of Marketing at the University of Mississippi, offers valuable insights into the optimal timing for brand storytelling. In an interview with Forbes, Christopher explains that “consumers are generally most open to brand stories when their decisions and purchases are driven by emotion rather than rationality.” He further elaborates that “consumers may employ a brand’s story to rationalise a high-risk, high-price purchase, particularly if it’s a luxury item they don’t necessarily need.
consumers may use a brand’s story to justify a high risk, high price purchase in their own minds – especially if it is a luxury item they do not need.
The concise yet significant insights shared by the Marketing professor serve as an invitation to readers of this Insights and Reflections blog to revisit the fundamentals and delve deeper into the significance of crafting an authentic and strategic brand story and narrative. It’s crucial to connect with the “Why” behind creating or developing a brand story. This reflection may inspire creative ideas and action plans to kick-start your brand storytelling journey and strategy.
Additionally, I invite readers to contemplate what makes institutional brands compelling with a strong and authentic brand story. We can also explore what strategies are effective in non-educational products, cause-driven initiatives, corporate brands, or how we can adapt these insights to create a personal brand story.
what makes institutional brands compelling with a strong and authentic brand story? What strategies are effective in non-educational products? Cause-driven initiatives? Personal brands?
“Brand storytelling is the cohesive narrative that weaves together the facts and emotions that your brand evokes. In addition to giving your customers reasons why they should buy a product or service, businesses need to start sharing the story behind their brand, why it exists, and why this matters, consistently across all communication.”
