Navigating PhD and ADHD: Don’t Speak to Me Before I’ve Had My Caffeine

Caffeine, as an alertness enhancer, cognitive stimulant, performance enhancer, or social lubricant, is often relied upon to kickstart an individual’s day and can potentially enhance a PhD student’s productivity, particularly those with inattentive ADHD.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a complex neurodevelopmental condition that affects an individual’s focus, self-control, and other executive functions. Specifically, inattentive ADHD is characterised by difficulties in sustaining attention, managing time, and completing tasks. These symptoms are often worsened by sleep disturbances, which are prevalent among individuals with ADHD. Restless nights can lead to daytime fatigue, further compounding these symptoms.

These are symptoms that can become challenging for those pursuing a PhD with ADHD. A study conducted in Ireland by the UK Adult ADHD Network found that 5.2% of university students declared they had been diagnosed with ADHD. Another study involving 232 tertiary students at the University of Western Australia reported that up to 16% exhibit clinically significant ADHD symptoms.

A critical yet underexplored symptom associated with ADHD is brain fog, characterised by difficulty in thinking, concentrating, and remembering information. It is linked to neuroinflammation and can be triggered by factors such as sleep deprivation, poor nutrition, and substance use. Despite its prevalence in ADHD, research in this area remains limited, highlighting the need for personalised strategies to effectively manage this symptom.

Caffeine in PhD Productivity and ADHD Management

Caffeine, a common stimulant, has been shown to alleviate some symptoms of ADHD, particularly those related to neuroinflammation and brain fog. By constricting the blood vessels around the brain, caffeine can alleviate symptoms such as heaviness and migraines, which are commonly reported by individuals with ADHD. This physiological response highlights the importance of understanding the nuanced effects of caffeine on neurodiverse populations.

The traditional 9 to 5 work schedule can present significant challenges for those experiencing brain fog. While caffeine is often criticised for its potential negative effects, for some, it serves as a crucial tool in managing daily symptoms and sustaining productivity. It’s essential to approach the management of ADHD symptoms with a nuanced perspective, recognising that strategies to alleviate symptoms are individual-specific. Caffeine consumption may offer substantial benefits for certain individuals.

When pursuing a PhD, research candidates, also known as PhD students, are often required to commit to a conventional 9 to 5 schedule, frequently extending into overtime. Caffeine becomes a necessity for PhD students, particularly those with ADHD, helping them navigate through the day.

Through trial and error, we can discover ways to adhere to the conventional 9 to 5 framework, whether through caffeine or other strategies (Deakin University)

 

As we adopt conventional techniques and routines to manage our symptoms while progressing through the workday, we gradually learn to work with our neurodiversity rather than against it. Accessing networks and communities where we can share our experiences and learn from others’ insights also makes navigating studies and managing neurodiversity easier.

    I found this really interesting and challenged my previous thoughts on ADHD. It would be great to see more research done in this area including potential impacts for younger learners.
